Joanne

This is an old song of mine. Was on the previous version of the site, lost after the crash.

I've used the Suno cover feature to make this new version, but the words & music are mine

Joanne

[Verse]

Sit tight, act right,

maybe he'll come tonight

waiting for the lover of your dream life

Drink more, like a whore

Maybe you can get a score

Some day you're gonna make a good wife

[Pre-chorus]

Late nights sitting by the fireside

Trying to make sense of the life you're in

Got no answers and you're getting tired

So you give yourself to the dreams within

[Chorus]

Jo-o-o-anne

Heart set free in the wind to roam

No-o-o ma-an

Knows how to care when you're on your own

Jo-o-o-anne

Heart set free in the wind to roam

No-o-o ma-an

Knows how to care when you're on your own

[Verse]

Hold out, it's cold out

Someone's got you sold out

Writing on the wall says it's over

Hands maul, tears fall

It ain't no love at all

He leaves some money and it's over

[Pre-chorus]

Late nights crying on a city street

Phoning a friend but there's no one home

You give your love to everyone you meet

But you wake up on your own

[Chorus]

Jo-o-o-anne

Heart set free in the wind to roam

No-o-o ma-an

Knows how to care when you're on your own

Jo-o-o-anne

Heart set free in the wind to roam

No-o-o ma-an

Knows how to care when you're on your own

[Outro, slowing]

Jo-anne, Jo-anne, Joanne

....Joanne [trailing off]

I read the lyrics first...couldn't tell much about it

Took a listen and it fit, Sounds good to me.. Owen

this is cool, love the 80s rock. Story is tight and clear. sounds good totally fits the genre.

couple small nit picks: "someday you'll make a good wife" maybe but only if your Richard Gere. 😁

the "knows how to care when you're on you're own" is the weakest part due to having to cram all the words in there. slight rephrasing to fix maybe?

over all i like it. 👍️

Really catchy, a sad story, how many Joan in the tres, very good lyrics Owen, and your version is really special, so personal and authentic, as if you were singing in a party @RainyDayMan

  • I like how you write conversationally. Your words really paint a picture. I like the original, and you did a really good job with matching the right melody for those lyrics.

  • @Tex @MuskieBait44 @MoraAmaroLaLoba @bhengen Thank you all for your comments!

@Tex I know what you mean. The music can make all the difference

@MuskieBait44 Actually you're not far off with the Richard Gere analogy. Although it is written from a 3rd party perspective, that line is really more of an internal thought - a dream.

"knows how to care when you're on you're own". I'll have to think on that. Nothing better immediately leaps to mind, but I'll let it simmer.

@MoraAmaroLaLoba Thanks for checking both versions, Mora. I write songs that I can play myself, so there'll always be a personal version, but it may not always be the best one!

@bhengen Glad you enjoyed it! It was one where I wrote the music first then fitted the lyric to it, so maybe that helped.

This is one of the very first songs I ever wrote, circa 1981, so definitely meant for that 80s vibe.

  • I love that this is from 1981 - one of the best things about SUNO is giving life to those really old recordings -

I get an REM/Murmur kind of vibe from the original that I don't get from SUNO version - what prompts did you use for SUNO?

  • Hey there Rainy... Gotta love Suno. The Suno version brings out the beauty of the writing.

The only line I got stuck on is, "So you give yourself to the dreams within" Kind of a bump in the road, for me, as I was reading / listening along.

Other than that, the song has a great Bryan Adams vibe.

    Good job!

Thanks guys! Appreciate you checking it out and commenting.

The prompt was: 80s synth rock, driving beat, strong bass lines, elec guitar. So nothing wildly exotic there. I'm not a prompt guru by any means.

Ya kinda lost me in story , But I kinda got it finally after listening it to twice

Yeah its got that 80's feel

  • I can understand that Elvis! It's not a story song in the usual way of those. Things implied rather than stated outright.

    Appreciate the feedback!
