Original song - Bad Places (Remastered)

I wrote and recorded this song last October but I wanted to see if the normalization and compression functions that were recommended on this forum made a difference in the sound quality. Does it sound distorted? Does it sound ok?

Lyrics:
Yea!
You think you need it
And you do
Yea
You're in bad places
And you want to get out
I won't tell what to do
Yea
You're in bad places
And you want to get out
And you're fallin' down
You know what you need
To turn it around

Definitely better Rob. I think this is the cleanest sound I've heard from you yet. Everything is really clear.
Good on you for working on this.

I didn't want to comment until someone else did. I'm biased because I wanted it to work. If RDM says it's cleaner, I'm really pleased it worked for you. It sounded better to me also. If you get the better microphone, there will be another clear step in the quality and clarity. I'm so happy this is working for you.

Sounds like you need a noise screen on mike on vocals , But it sounds better than earlier recordings

Thanks. The normalization and compression functions I learned are simply volume functions but are a bit complicated to fully understand and use most effectively without some study. Apparently compression controls the difference between the loudest and softest sounds. I just used the presets.
I think I remember reading an article about a music producer who was known to be big on compression. His sound on Brad Delp's (singer of Boston) band RTZ's first album is fantastic. It's like nothing I ever heard before. Very ultra-clean sound.

You could always go to night school on recording , I'm sure colleges have them . I eat one meal a day to afford studios lol, atmos mixes are $400.00 . Time consuming , nuance by nuance , I bet majors are paying $4000.00

I just use the presets too. It's all I know how to do. I've watched someone who actually understands this stuff change the presets, but I have no way to know what is making it better, and what is making it worse. I can certify this. . . when HE uses normalization and compression, it has a way more positive effect than when I do it just using the presets.

There are videos, websites and forums online that explain in detail how to use all the functions in Audacity. One video I briefly watched gave the settings they use for optimal recordings. You can also find lots of information online about the science of audio which is very interesting. A lot of it though is quite difficult to understand, at least for me.
