All the distribution sites are problematic to say the least, they all have hidden charges so be careful, i would deffo look around and find the one that suits you the best not just go for the biggest or the most popular.

for me i'd simply make a free youtube page put my songs on there and spam tiktok,lol.

if your really sure you want to release your songs to places like Spotify and apple music then you cant avoid a distribution site but it can get very expensive and you won't earn any money from it so is it really a good thing, you can spam youtube page links and use the fact its free to get ppl to have a look, more likely to browse all the things you have on that page if its free than take a risk on paying for a song.

I personally have no interest in promoting any of my songs but I did look into the details of some of these sites and you are absolutely right. The majority of users say they are not worth the money they paid, they, like many book printers, exploit the vanity syndrome and just milk the punters for as much as they can get.
