red headdress lyrics

verse 1

She stood out there on the pier,

dark clouds above the sea.

A lady she looked down,

her face turned away from me

Who she was or what she'd done,

was too hard for me to guess.

Lonely lady on her own

in a red headdress

verse 2

Eyes met and spoke, as if to say,

some things that couldn't be said.

Pain hidden by the past,

that stayed inside her head.

The wind blew in from the sea,

her hair was a tangled mess.

Lonely lady on her own,

in a red headdress

verse 3

She wiped away all the tears,

running down with the rain.

A scarf to hide her face,

It couldn't mask the pain,

Her hands gripped the rail so tight,

Clearly someone in distress.

Lonely lady on her own,

in a red headdress

bridge

There's nothing that's worth dyin' for

Tomorrow may offer you more

Live each day, like it's your last

when you're born, the die is cast

verse 4

She looked at me where I sat,

I smiled and shook my head

I didn't say a word,

the message had been said.

In hope and despair she moaned,

and I took her by the hand.

Lonely lady on her own,

in a red headdress

outro

Still wearing her red headdress

her red headdress

red headdress

  • I love how everything is implied here. I'm assuming the storyline is talking someone out of suicide.

    Pain hidden by the past,

    Clearly someone in distress

There's nothing that's worth dyin' for

I smiled and shook my head

In hope and despair she moaned,

and I took her by the hand.

and held together with the strong visual of her red headdress

It all feels quiet and understated, for something that is actually intense ,dramatic and fateful

Gives me a film noire vibe.. Very interesting and well crafted.

Think Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman and you have it!

  • Does this relate to a specific film then Sid?

No Owen, I write easier if I can picture the scene in my mind, so I put Bogey & Bergman in trenchcoats on the end of Blackpool pier! I'm still waiting for Speilberg to call.
