Rest in peace, Truth —

written by Elvis on how that all works

verse 1

She’s tellin’ folks I broke her heart,

Like I planned it from the start.

But she don’t mention all the nights she cried,

Then swore she’d leave, but never tried.

Chorus

Rest in peace, Truth — guess you’re gone for good,

Buried deep where her stories stood.

She’s preachin’ like a saint, polishin’ her crown,

While I’m the devil she wrote down.

Rest in peace, Truth —

She killed you beautifully.

Verse 2

Now her friends all cross the street,

Like they smell the smoke on me.

But they don’t know the things she said,

When she was drunk and full of dread.

Chorus

Rest in peace, Truth — guess you’re gone for good,

Buried deep where her stories stood.

She’s preachin’ like a saint, polishin’ her crown,

While I’m the devil she wrote down.

Rest in peace, Truth —

She killed you beautifully.

Bridge

I don’t hate her, hell, I understand,

We all need a story that makes us stand.

So I’ll light one more cigarette,

And toast to what we both forget.

Outro (soft)

Rest in peace, Truth…

She killed you beautifully

Elvis is something of an expert on the subject, having been divorced three times and lived through every shade of love and loss that comes with it. He’s seen the promises people make under bright lights fade into the long gray stretch of real life, and these days, when someone says “’til death do us part,” he just kind of shakes his head—half amused, half heartbroken—like a man who’s learned that forever usually ends a little sooner than we plan

  • Lot of bitterness coming across in this, which I'm sure is quite deliberate.

I'd have to be in the mood to listen to this one. I think it's a quality song, but I'm not sure it's one I like to hear. But for anyone who has experienced something similar I'm sure it rings true.

Some people stay together because, like divorce, relationships are 50/50—each person gives and takes in equal measure, and both are willing to keep showing up when things get hard. It’s not that everything is perfect or effortless, but there’s a balance between love and struggle, forgiveness and frustration, giving and receiving. They stay because both people keep choosing the relationship, day after day, putting in their half of the effort to make it work. When that balance holds—when both sides keep carrying their share—the connection lasts

Divorce is often said to be easy in America because the legal process is relatively straightforward compared to many other countries. In most states, couples can dissolve a marriage without proving wrongdoing, thanks to “no-fault” laws that allow either spouse to cite irreconcilable differences as the reason for separation. While emotionally and financially it can still be difficult, the system itself emphasizes individual freedom and efficiency: there’s no requirement for lengthy waiting periods or complex justifications in many jurisdictions. This ease reflects a broader cultural acceptance of personal autonomy and the right to move on when a relationship no longer works.
