it was awhile ago .
I wrote “Heaven’s Start and Hell’s On” out of the same place I was trying to climb out of—deep depression, the kind that makes the line between faith and doubt blur. The song came from wrestling with the idea that heaven and hell aren’t somewhere far away, but places you fall into or crawl out of inside yourself. It’s about that slow, ugly climb back toward light, when you start to see some kind of hope again but still can’t help being cynical about the promises religion makes. It’s me trying to make sense of pain and belief at the same time—half prayer, half middle finger.
