I Go My Way

Been working on this one a bit here and there since 2024. Inspired by one of the late Max Ehrmann's lesser known poems: "I Go My Way". Max Ehrmann is most famously known for his poem, "Desiderata".

Any feedback is welcome. Thank you for taking the time.

I GO MY WAY

V1

Cars go racing by

A typical work day

Sad faces scurrying about

Stacks of bills to pay

From dawn till dusk

Travelin’ a lone byway

Hummin’ a humble tune

Takes me through my day

CHORUS

After I’ve come to say

What I came to say

My worn-out welcome

I don’t overstay

I go my way

Quietly I go my way

I go my way

Quietly I go my way

V2

Born a castaway

A castaway I’ll always be

Wild as the wind blows

Find me lost at sea

This world’s glitter and gold

Mean nothing to me

Wisdom is my windfall

Knowledge is the key

CHORUS

After I’ve come to say

What I came to say

My worn-out welcome

I don’t overstay

I go my way

Quietly I go my way

I go my way

Quietly I go my way

V3

And in the calm

Of a warm afternoon breeze

I watch branches dancing

High up in the trees

Millions of stars

Will soon be all mine to gaze

The universe

Will soon be all mine to praise

Ooooh-ooooh-ooh

Ooooh-ooooh-ooh

Ooooh-ooooh-ooh

Ooooh-ooh

CHORUS

I go my way

Quietly I go my way

I go my way

Quietly I go my way.

Sounds like a good swing back and forth campfire song or bar song.

The 3/4 time makes that happen.

    Nice perspective in the lyric
  • @HummerWisdom - look at you dipping your toes into prog rock :). I like these lyrics. they are simple and direct. not familiar with him, i'll have to look him up.. not sure about the cadence of the guitar, but that's me :)

  • @Domd Thank you for your insight. Didn't even know it's a 3/4 timing song tho' I was struggling a bit playing along with the track.

Sounds like a drifter's theme song. Well done

  • Good folk song Renne , yes its 3/4 time

  • That is lovely! A wonderful reinterpretation of Mr Ehrmann's poem, which I wasn't familiar with.

The chorus is key, and it's strong, and memorable.

The other really important part to me is V3. It's the reward or justification for going quietly: the universe is mine to enjoy.

Good job on this Renee. It's really nice.

  • Max Ehrmann made it to 72 years old , thats pretty old for being born in 1872 , Most people died in there 60ties back then

While listening to your song I was moving my head from let to right, following the rhythm, nice cadence, easy to Mae listener hum the melody. Nice lyrics, yes, your war, wonderful independence. @HummerWisdom

Isn't it always so satisfying when you've been working on a song for a long time and it finally comes to fruition. Nice job Renee.

really enjoyed the tune. got such an old school songwriting style and cadence to it. The story weaves beautifully within the vocal delivery, very Dylan-esque! This kind of storytelling is what makes songwriting a venerated craft during its early years.

  • @arnabs Thank you for your kind words. You wouldn't be the first to say, 'Dylan-esque'. But at this stage or any, as a woman, I don't mind. Just got done hearing your Windmills song; brilliant and lovely.
