Drunk Dialin'

I guess this is a drinkin' song (kinda) 😍 Fun song to sing! And much of this story is true all except for Stew, V4 (forced rhyme, indeed!) Any feedback is welcome. Thank you, Renee

DRUNK DIALIN’

Woo-hoo-hoo, woo-hoo-hoo, woo-hoo-hoo

V1

The first drunk dialin’ I did

Was back in the ninth grade

I had a crush on my science teacher

His name was Gregory Kane

He drove a yellow VW bug

With a black ragtop

He’d drive by me walkin’ home from school

And when he wouldn’t stop

[Chorus]

Drunk dialin’

Drunk dialin’

Feels good in the moment

Feels bad the next mornin’

V2

Now, Mr. Kane had a lovely wife

And a whole slew of kids

But that didn’t stop me none

I wanted what was hers and his

So, I hooked up with his niece, Dodi

We became best friends

Stole her mother’s Cougar, drank some Mad Dog

Drunk dialin’ started again, yeah

[Chorus]

Drunk dialin’

Oh, drunk dialin’

Feels good in the moment

Feels bad the next mornin’

V3

Now, Mister Kane never said a word

But I know that he knew

And when he’d call my name in class

I believe his heart rang true

I suppose I fed his ego

Could’ve sworn he wanted me, too

And that hug he gave me graduation day

Was all that he could do, yeah

[Chorus]

Drunk dialin’

Oh, drunk dialin’

Feels good in the moment

Feels bad the next mornin’

V4

Well, I finally gave up on Mister Kane

Found a boy that left me blue

Oh, and it started all over again

I was drunk dialing, Stew

But Stew didn’t love me in the least

Oh, but what else is new?

Because when you’re drunk dialing

It’s the best you can do, yeah

[Chorus]

Drunk dialin’

Oh, drunk dialin’

Feels good in the moment

Feels bad the next mornin’, yeah-yeah, oooh-oooh-oooh-aha……

[Chorus]

Drunk dialin’

Oh, drunk dialin’

Feels good in the moment

Feels bad the next mornin’, yeh-ee-yeah, yeah-yeah

Oh, drunk dialin’, woo-hoo, hoo-hoo!

  • @HummerWisdom - not sure if this song was meant to be funny, but it is.. tbh. when I first read that, I thought you has said nine, not ninth grade. 😂.

  • @bhengen Yes. Light-hearted, whimsical song. Sort of funny, I guess.

  • This is just a personal view, but I think songs work better when the listener can put themselves into the story, and I think there's too much of you in this one to allow that to happen. But that is an opinion, not a fact. I'd try sticking with "my teacher" for example, rather than naming names. My other suggestion would be to focus on how the person was feeling, or the moments leading up to drunk dialling more than on who they were calling. More of an "I embarrassed myself" vibe.

I think "drunk diallin'" has marvellous potential! It lends itself to the kind of light, whimsical style you've already got going here.

  • Your teacher eh , Well this is a funny song

I have to agree with @RainyDayMan on this one. I really like this one conceptually, and the chorus is a lot of fun.

But the verses have too much specific detail for my taste. Unless you're going for the comedic country song or punk-rock vibes, but in that case I don't think the verses are wild enough. They seem too low-key and real, which they might be, but then that might make it tough for some to feel the comedy elements that seem intentional, as it is a song about drunk dialing people.

Conceptually the lyrics reminded me of The Police, specifically "Don't Stand So Close To Me" (kind of the inverse of your song) and "Every Breath You Take", so I think those lyrics might be worth studying to see how they tip-toe around specific details. Most people don't even know that "Every Breath You Take" is about a stalker.

@HummerWisdom - I had fun listening to this song! I was able to relate because I did a lot of prank dialing, not drunk. LOL.

The tune was catchy and made me smile.

I loved "Drunk Dialing!" Too funny and cute. It fits your personality.

    It's a touchdown!

    Thank you for sharing.

  • @TammyB

    @schmalex

Thank you both for your differing views. I just might have to have 2 of this song!!

Loosely based upon some of your suggestions and how I appreciate them, this is what I came up with so far. Better? Thanks!

DRUNK DIALIN’ (take 2) Lol! 😍

    V1

Out at Betty’s Bar an’ Grill

    Puttin’ a good one on

    Lookin’ the divas tonight

    Lookin’ to have fun

    Dancin’ with your girlfriends

    Hopin’ you’ll catch his eye

    But he’s busy playin’ pool

Ya’d rather be with Bob, besides, and

    [Pre-Chorus 1]

    Suddenly, you miss him

    Last call, three a.m.

    Now, stumblin’ home alone

    Drunk dialin’ again

    [Chorus]

    Drunk dialin’

    Drunk dialin’

    Feels good at the moment

    Feels bad the next mornin’

    Drunk dialin’

    Drunk dialin’

Your heart put you up to it

Your brain wishes ya’d never done it

    V2

    Now, you’re grocery shoppin’

Catch him the corner of your eye

Bob is lookin’ better than ever

    Hide from him, you try

‘Cuz you know that he knows

    The pathetic message you left

And you can’t take it back

    All you feel is bereft

    [Pre-Chorus 2]

    And suddenly, you hate yourself

    Wantin’ to disappear

But once you get a taste for it

    You no longer care

    [Chorus]

    Drunk dialin’

    Drunk dialin’

    Feels good at the moment

    Feels bad the next mornin’

    Drunk dialin’

    Drunk dialin’

Your heart put you up to it

Your brain wishes ya’d never done it

    V3

Not that we’ve all done it

    But I’ve done it, too

    My ninth-grade teacher, Mr. Kane

It was all I could do

He’d drive by in his yellow Bug

As I was walkin’ home from school

God, how I wished he’d give me a ride

    Drunk-dialin’ was my tool

    [Music]

    [Chorus]

    Drunk dialin’

    Drunk dialin’

    Feels good at the moment

    Feels bad the next mornin’

    Drunk dialin’

    Drunk dialin’

Your heart put you up to it

Your brain wishes ya’d never done it!

@HummerWisdom I like the changes. Definitely going a more universally relatable direction. I also like the new pre-chorus / chorus structure you created.

I think removing the verses about Mr Kane's family is a smart decision, so now the song can be more about the drunk dialing, and less about a 9th grader's obsession with a teacher.

  • @schmalex Thank you for your help in making my song better. As I too, like version 2 MUCH better! But I won't deny it was fun pondering back on Mister Kane with the first version! 😍 Tho' I didn't leave him entirely out of version 2 as you can see.

    THANKS A MILLION,

its always the number one rule to relate with the listener , So its a better version . Drunk dialing is in a lot of country songs over the years

@ElvisNash Thank you! If not for TSF, this song would've sucked tho' it was doing well enough on SoundCloud as version 1. But I really love version 2! And I know, nothing too original but a fun song to sing! I don't write many drinking songs as I'm not much of a drinker, I suppose (anymore) Lol! 😍

Don't get me wrong @HummerWisdom I do like the original version of the song as well, it just has an off-beat vibe to the lyrics. Almost more like a punk-rock song with the extra Mr Kane stuff.

  • @schmalex that would sum me up perfectly "off-beat". I recall I used that very word to describe myself as a songwriter in my song, "Never Gonna Hear My Song on the Radio".

    Cheers!

    Renee

  • Basically all Nashville are alcoholics , demonstrated in 1000's of songs . You hear the word whiskey all the time , its a staple in country music

  • Good job Renee! For me at least this is a much better version, and certainly far more relatable.

I applaud anyone who's willing to put in the effort to improve and rewrite, whether it's in my direction or 180 degrees the opposite!!

  • @RainyDayMan Thank you so much helping make my song better!

    Cheers!

It seems like you had wayyy more fun singing version 1. It's the one that made me smile and laugh the most.

Version 2 was good, too. It wasn't sung with as much joy as version 1. I want to hear about Mr. Kane and the drunk dialing!!! lol. I love how you included him in V2.

Overall, I like how you were able to pivot and make two enjoyable tunes.

    Good job!

  • @TammyB Thank you for your kind thoughts. While I still love V1 because of the emotional attachment, I believe V2 works better for the majority. But I could be wrong 'cuz there's YOU! Lol! And yeah, I just had to include Mister Kane in version 2! Truly was my BIGGEST teacher crush from ninth grade to graduation twelfth grade!

    Have a lovely day!
