Forgive Me, Brother

Another one for my estranged brother, Dale. He'll never hear this but that's okay. It helps my heart heal...somewhat. And one day, I'll get it right! Thank you for any suggestions and for listening.

FORGIVE ME, BROTHER

Ah-ha, ah-ha, ah-ha

Ah-ha, ah-ha, ah-ha

[Verse 1]

I hope you’re doing well, this day

I hope you’re doing well, this day, Brother

Seems we’ve lost our way, lost our way

But I hope you’re doing well this day

[Verse 2]

I know that you miss Mother, Brother

I know you miss Mother in the worst way

I wish there was something I could do or say

And I hope you’re doing well this day

[Chorus]

Forgive me, Brother

For leaving you behind

Don’t know what I was thinking

I was out of my mind

‘Cuz Nashville ain’t what I thought she’d be

And there’s no coming home

‘Cuz moving, it ain’t free

[Verse 3]

As I’m driving to work down the freeway

I hope you’re doing well, this day, Brother

Seems there’s nothing more for us to say

But I hope you’re doing well this day

[Verse 4]

I know you miss Mother, Brother

I know you miss Mother in the worst way

I miss her too, wish I would’ve stayed

And I hope you’re doing well this day

[Chorus]

Forgive me, Brother

For leaving you behind

Don’t know what I was thinking

I was out of my mind

‘Cuz Nashville ain’t what I thought she’d be

And there’s no coming home

‘Cuz moving, it ain’t free

Ah-ha, ah-ha, ah-ha

Ah-ha, ah-ha, ah-ha

[Chorus]

Forgive me, Brother

For leaving you behind

Don’t know what I was thinking

I was out of my mind

‘Cuz Nashville ain’t what I thought she’d be

But there’s no coming home

‘Cuz moving, it ain’t free.

Ah-ha, ah-ha, ah-ha

Ah-ha, ah-ha, ah-ha

Ah-ha, ah-ha, ah-ha

Ah-ha, ah-ha, ah-ha

The hurt is evident, and portrayed extremely well. It's a pity if you say he won't read it. The sincerity is there to feel.

I wish you good luck in any reconciliation between you and your brother.

The hardest step ever, is always the first.

  • I think anyone listening to this will hear the sincerity and raw honesty of it.

The line that hit me hardest was "But there’s no coming home", and that's true for all of us. There's no going back, right or wrong.

I suspect the most healing words will be yours, but since you asked for suggestions, I think you could change the following line "Cuz moving ain't free" since this focuses more narrowly on the cost aspect, and give it wider implications "cause nothing's the same" sort of thing (except that obviously doesn't rhyme).

Another change you could consider is "I know that you miss Mother, Brother" → "I know you miss our Mother, Brother" just to smooth it a little.

But these really are your thoughts and words. Unless you go "Yeah that's really what I wanted to say" stick with what you've got.

One of my brothers and I haven't spoken in years, I feel your pain in this song. It's all on me though, I shut him out, but it still hurts.

The one line that stuck out to me was moving ain't free, I assume you are referring to things beyond the monetary. Moving there cost you family ties, and moving back could cost you your dream?

  • @HummerWisdom - this will resonate with anyone whom for whatever reason stop talking. I stopped talking to one of my sisters then she died. I would keep trying to reconnect, you never know.
  • Thank you everyone for your thoughts. Appreciate you very much,

    Renee
