There's A Song In There Somewhere

This song is dedicated to Doc West. Doc was originally from L.A. and was a great songwriter and friend I met in Nashville, TN as well as a tremendous guitar-slinger. Any feedback is appreciated. Thanks for taking the time.

May Doc West be resting in peace knowing . . .

THERE’S A SONG IN THERE SOMEWHERE

[Verse 1]

The sadder the life the sweeter the song

Heartfelt never finds you wrong

And when words won’t come it’s just a matter of time

Before the right words come along

[Chorus]

There’s a song in there somewhere

A song in there somewhere

Everybody has a story to share

I know there’s a song in there

[Verse 2]

Wishing I could take credit for this hook

But that would be entirely crooked

‘Cuz a dear friend of mine, ‘Doc West’ Lord, rest his soul

After you said it, he’d give you a look, an’ say:

[Chorus]

‘There’s a song in there somewhere’

A song in there somewhere

Everybody has a story to share

I know there’s a song in there

[Bridge]

Wishing I’d fed it back to him

My dear friend, Doc West

When he was crossing over the rainbow

He’d know he’d done his best

[Chorus]

‘There’s a song in there somewhere’

A song in there somewhere

Everybody has a story to share

I know there’s a song in there

[Instrumental]

[Verse 3]

The sadder the life the sweeter the song

Heartfelt never finds you wrong

And when music won’t come it’s just a matter of time

Before the right melody comes along

[Chorus/Tag]

‘There’s a song in there somewhere’

A song in there somewhere

Everybody has a story to share

I know there’s a song –

There’s a song in there somewhere.

  • Nice song, catchy hook too.

Consider puttin' this to music, it's got a nice bouncy feel to it.

  • @sidshovel I'll try an' put it to music at some point, however, at the moment I'm backed up with lyrics, lyrics, and more lyrics! Not a bad place to be but I happen to be on a lyrical roll right now. And hoping I write one great enough to enter in the Great American Song Contest (lyric only category) as they've extended the deadline to Dec. 18.

    Wish my luck!

  • Renee, this starts really strong. Verse 1 and the Chorus are dead on.

I feel like the parts about Doc West are actually the weakest. I can absolutely understand you wanting to commemorate him - that may be the whole point of the song! And not wanting to take credit for lines inside the song is to your credit. If I was asked how to take this and make the most polished song I could, I would drop them and make v2 about the listener- sort of like: if you're hurting now take this to heart, it'll turn into a great song - not literally that, but with that meaning.

But we write songs for a reason, and if your reason is to remember Doc West and thank him, then I salute you.

  • @RainyDayMan yeah, I've always wanted to write a song dedicated to Doc. Years later, this came along. I feel that V1 and V3 are for the listener. Maybe it's not clear enough? Thanks for your thoughts.

    Renee
