I Really Wanted To Believe You

A few days back I'd posted a song with the same title but in a political fashion. Since I really liked the title more than the previous song, thought I'd take a stab at a love song/break up song which I don't often write💔. Thank you for any feedback.

I REALLY WANTED TO BELIEVE YOU

[Verse 1]

Goodbye won’t be easy

But staying is more tiresome

‘Cuz I’ve wasted so much time

Climbing from under your thumb

And the trust we had built

Has come crumbling down

When a man can’t look his woman in the eyes

It’s time to get out ‘a town

[Chorus]

I really wanted to believe you

Darlin’, I really did

But the lies you told, put my heart on hold

Now, leaving’s all there is

All there is

Is leaving to do

[Verse 2]

You promised to stop drinking

Spending money like its water

But your promises, like blue smoke

They only turn to vapor

And the home we had built

Is but an empty tomb

When a man can’t keep the promises he’s made

‘I love yous’ just won’t do

[Chorus]

I really wanted to believe you

Darlin’, I really did

But the lies you told, put my heart on hold

Now, leaving’s all there is

All there is

Is leaving to do

[Instrumental]

[Chorus]

I really wanted to believe you

Darlin’, I really did

But the lies you told, put my heart on hold

Now, leaving’s all there is

All there is

Is leaving…just leaving to do.

  • Nice!

Feels like there could be a good rhyme in the chorus using believin' and leaving. Maybe:

    I tried hard for believin'

Now all there is, is leaving

    All there is

    is leaving left to do

  • Good song, nice lyrics.

    Structure's good.

    Something to consider:

    "Now, leaving’s all there is

    All there is

    Is leaving to do".

Too many "is" and two together is distracting, consider a break, e.g.

    All there is left

Is leaving (left) to do" (optional)

  • hmmmm, both great suggestions. Let me try them. Thank you, Owen and Sid!
