A murder ballad I wrote exploring themes of obsession and isolation through the eyes of a troubled person. It’s my first attempt at writing something like this. Hope you guys enjoy it for what it is.

The YouTube link I posted doesn’t seem to work. You can find the music at BrandonDudleyMusic on YouTube. My apologies for the inconvenience.

The Dagger

Naivety
is a cruel mister
I’m as blind as I can be
And I still miss her
How I long for my warm breath on her neck
Her fingers running through my hair as my mind resets

I fly away

Reach for her tender lips
and caress her jaw
Take her innocence in my arms
and rub the table raw

Then I awake

Solitude
is a warm gun
I seen her around
And knew she was the one
How I long for her name and for her hand
But there’s no way in God’s good grace I could ever be her man

I shy away

Is she everything I dream of
Or am I chasing a ghost
This hurts too damn bad to be love
And that’s what haunts the most

I pry away

Chivalry
has no home anymore
It was painful to see
As I held the door
How I long for her time and for a chance
Then she ran into his arms
The dagger in my plans

I drift away

What does he have that I don’t?
What does she see?
The daggers twisted right to the bone
And it will not let me be

I cry away

“Patience
is a bitter tree
But the fruit it bears can be sweet”
That’s what they say come what may
I’ll be fine
But her love just can’t be his if it can’t be mine

I fire away

Brought her to our favorite spot by the willowed creek
The same one we would frequent the dusk of every week
How I long to let her know where my heart lies
The trees could not hide my fear nor my
bloodshot eyes

I strike away

Ran at him blade in hand with a hunger for blood
Wrestled him to the earth in a bath of mud
Chaos had shown itself
Her caterwauling’s dread
He went left and I went right for the nape of his head

An avalanche of red

I only ever thought about what she could offer
The thought never crossed my mind
She’s someone’s daughter

I drag her to the water

Held her beneath the crest till her struggle stopped
Gave her all my best and brought her to the top
Sat there in a silent bay like a hound from a feast
In a twisted kind of way she looked at peace

And she flys away

Limerance
is a cruel mister
I ain’t been the same since
And I still miss her
How I long for that twine around my neck
Just keep the veil off my face so no one forgets

And we fly away

Greetings! This hook/title came from a little sign in Benchmark Realty's window that caught my eye as I was pulling up to go and walk my dog. I'd seen the sign before but it never struck me as a song. As I was walking my dog I wrote the greater part of following lyric and isn't a phone memo recorder a nice little tool? Any feedback is appreciated as in where else I might've gone with it the lyric.

And I know the line 'A little drop 'a honey goes a long way' is cliche so I'm trying to come up with something else as I did in the final verse. And how 'holding open a door', the last line I needed in the last verse came along, was from a kind Mexican fella opening the door for me as I was picking up my take out Mexican dinner that same evening. Love it when that happens!

Looking at this lyric again, I suppose it could be construed as a children's song of which I don't have many.

For a listen to a stripped down version ====> https://soundcloud.com/reneelachapelle/kindness-is-cool

KINDNESS IS COOL

[Verse 1]

Not something you come across every day

Not something you learn in school

A little drop ‘a honey goes a long way

Kindness is cool

[Verse 2]

Inside of a joke is all well and fine

Until you’re the one ridiculed

When you’re the butt of the joke, you’ll find

Kindness is cool

[Chorus]

Kindness is cool

No two ways about it

Kindness is cool

Don’t leave home without it

[Verse 3]

You can keep it under your hat for a time

Like some crotchety ol’ fool

Or you can let your heart light shine

Kindness is cool

[Chorus]

Kindness is cool

No two ways about it

Kindness is cool

Don’t leave home without it

[Bridge]

Always in fashion, never goes out of style

The sun kissed glow of a warm smile

Do-do, do-do-do-do-do-do, Do-do, do-do-do-do-do-do

[Chorus]

Kindness is cool

No two ways about it

Kindness is cool

Don’t leave home without it

[Verse/Tag]

Not something you come across every day

Not something you learn in school

Holding open a door goes a long way

Kindness is cool!

Kindness is cool!

Kindness is cool!

©️ 2024 Renee La Chapelle - All Rights Reserved

Canadian born Stan Rogers wrote this song in 1978 and it has been released first on his LP "Turnaround" in the same Year (I think). The grieve of a son to the loss of his boat, made by his Father and named after his mother is a gentle reminder of the danger of a hard working fisherman's day to day life. I truly love the song and I hope I do it justice...

https://soundclick.com/share.cfm?id=14568750

As always, feedback is highly welcome...:-)

Hey all - I wrote this some time ago but thought I would share it. I've put many things I've written to music, but I only did an acapella version of this to put the lyrics together and haven't revisited it yet. Too many new writings. Please share your thoughts and critique at will. All opinions are valid, and an honest opinion is always the right opinion. I'm certain, as many of you know, this will evolve as it is put to music. Please give me a good critique that may serve to guide that process as well. My initial thought after revisiting this is to drop the middle chorus and break it up with a bridge but lay your thoughts on me.

Thank you in advance for checking it out and giving me some feedback.

https://www.reverbnation.com/harbingerroad/song/34392666-master-of-hiding

The Master of Hiding

I’m the master of hiding my friend

You’ll never know where I start and I end

Too many years covering up what I feel

Now just a reflex unable to heal

Behind this cloak, protector, my shield

My feelings hide, left never to yield

A lifetime of learning my craft

You can cry, you can scream, but I won’t cry or laugh

I’m the master of hiding

How did I get here

Emotionally dying

Internal pain and despair

Laughing while crying

I’m your brother, your father, your friend

Love too much, not enough, and pretend

All alone in a large, crowded room

Stuck in my head with the things I assume

Feeling battered, beaten, torn down

You’ll never know as I polish my crown

So deceitful in who I really am

Tears me apart while I don’t give a damn

It starts out with some practice to heal

But after a while it’s just harder to feel

No intent with a path that seemed clear

The years roll by and you’re suddenly here

Heed my warning my loves in my life

Never hide, bare your soul, face the strife

Only to heal if you’re free and let go

Covering up only buries your soul

Please… no more masters of hiding

Let yourself feel what you feel

No more masters of hiding

No more masters of hiding

https://gabeschwartz.bandcamp.com/album/flabbergaster?t=8

This is a song I wrote/recorded this last year. Inspired by driving through the small towns around where I grew up. Thank you for listening.

In every town of ash and umber
What was made so long ago
The promise that brought them
Between Erie and the Ohio

Did they all thrive in vibrant color
Primary bouquets against the oak
Evergreen, spruce, and maple
Between Erie and the Ohio

I see all the fading colors
As the pigment slowly drains
Peeling bark among the leaves now
Losing ground to the gray

Finding shapes in whitewood aster
Goldenrod is in full glow
A backdrop of brunnera
Between Erie and the Ohio

Under a lilac tinted skyline
Marigold has begun to go
Lavender grey is leavin' on time
Between Erie and the Ohio

I love all the splendid colors
Burning off the end of the day
A delightful reminder
To hold against the gray

The light of evening and of morning
Illuminates these weathered roads
As we search for all the beauty
Between Erie and the Ohio

In 2022 I was asked to play a song at a friends funeral. I was looking around for inspiration when I found a great poem, first published in 1934 by Clare Harner with the title "Immortality". Those lines touched me deeply and I thought, this is already a possible song. So, I took the liberty to change them minimally to fit them better into the tune. I named it "Not a prayer". I hope this song may help to sooth the loss and help others in their grief.

https://soundclick.com/r/s8nw5y

...and as always, your feedback, good or bad, is welcome...:-)

Not a prayer

Text: Clare Harner / Music: Stefan Portune

Do not stand at my grave and weep

I am not there; I do not sleep.

I am a thousand winds that blow,

I am the diamond glints on snow,

I am the sun on ripened grain,

I am the gentle autumn rain.

When you awake in morning’s hush

I am the swift uplifting rush

Of quiet birds in circling flight.

I am the soft star shine at night.

Do not stand at my grave and cry

I am not there; I did not die.

Do not stand at my grave and weep

I am not there; I do not sleep.

Do not stand at my grave and cry

I am not there; I did not die.

For I'm not there; I didn't die.
