Take one last look

To honour Owens wishes, my last post

A little Antipodean song entitled "fair maiden of this harsh land"

Goodbye my friend and thank you.

Sid

See you all over at Marsha's

[verse 1]

Shackles rubbed my open wounds,

sweat made the pain even worse.

A lady, she was handin' out water,

figured this angel must be a nurse.

[verse 2]

She came to me I took the bowl,

kindly swatted away the flies.

"Whats ya name young lady, I said,"

"if it pleases you sir, it's Lorelei."

[chorus]

Fair maiden of this harsh land,

sure you've brought me cheer.

First joy I've seen, since we set sail,

an' the last that I'll see here.

[verse 3]

For the takin' of a man's silk cloth,

I was sent to van Diemens Land.

It was either I go on this holiday,

or else they'll chop off my hand.

[bridge]

For ten years I worked the fields,

choppin' trees, an' plantin' seeds.

Till I got my ticket of freedom,

an' earned the Kings pardon.

[chorus]

Fair maiden of this harsh land,

sure you've brought me cheer.

First joy I've seen, since we set sail,

an' the last that I'll see here.

[outro]

Saved enough for a passage home,

For I was on my way to the docks.

When I spotted those fair locks,

bless the last day I was ever alone.

  • This one is very interesting for me, and I tell you I have found myself back in the old „Lorelei“ stories that are famous here. I even worked at a show at the Lorelei-Open air stage so it brings back good memories.
Your style on this one is as good as usual. But what is Marsha’s if you don’t mind me asking?
  • Ahhh ok I found it myself 😜
