The Kind of Freedom That Kills

Good morning, Songsters. Truly enjoying your material; some very interesting topics out there!

I appreciate any feedback on this one. It was a bit tough to write because freedom is perceived as a good thing of which it is, however, there is that kind of freedom which is a detriment to a nation's survival. So, I thought I'd give it a go somewhat based upon Scripture but not so much a Christian song as we know them today.

Thanks so much for listening ===> https://soundcloud.com/reneelachapelle/the-kind-of-freedom-that-kills

THE KIND OF FREEDOM THAT KILLS

Freedom is a good thing

But freedom can be used against us

I’m talkin’ about that kind of freedom

Leaves a nation defenseless

‘Cuz when a nation turns her back on God

Goes her own way

Like that fallen city of Nineveh

It’s too late to pray

[Chorus]

Freedom is a good thing

But freedom don’t come cheap

Seems the more entitled this country becomes

The less blessings she reaps

Don’t get me wrong

I believe in the freedom to do God’s will

But the Devil’s kind of freedom

Is the kind of freedom that kills

Freedom is a good thing

When you’re on the winning side

But when a you’re given the license to kill

By means of genocide

Well, that’s the kind of freedom

Made up in the minds of men

Men with twisted hearts

Using God’s word as their defense

[Chorus]

Freedom is a good thing

But freedom don’t come cheap

Seems the more entitled this country becomes

The less blessings she reaps

Don’t get me wrong

I believe in the freedom to do God’s will

But the Devil’s kind of freedom

Is the kind of freedom that kills

[Bridge]

And whatever happened to ‘till death do us part’?

Seems we've become a nation of throw-away hearts

Just a nation of throw-away-hearts

[Chorus]

Freedom is a good thing

But freedom don’t come cheap

Seems the more entitled this country becomes

The less blessings she reaps

Don’t get me wrong

I believe in the freedom to do God’s will

But the Devil’s kind of freedom

Is the kind of freedom that kills

[Verse 3]

And from their ivory towers

Mighty men wave their magic wands

They make nations rise and fall

With the treasures they abscond

And that’s the kind of freedom

That only comes with the clout of kings

And you can’t blame God

For the balls and chains it brings

[Chorus]

Freedom is a good thing

But freedom don’t come cheap

Seems the more entitled this country becomes

The less blessings she reaps

Don’t get me wrong

I believe in the freedom to do God’s will

But the Devil’s kind of freedom

Is the kind freedom that kills

Good song, nice melody, catchy chorus.

    enjoyed the song,

    well done Renee,

    Sid

  • I think that’s the best song I’ve heard from you so far
    Sounds good Renee !!!
  • I agree with Elvis. The best I've heard from you. The melody is catchy and flows naturally.

As usual, I have a couple of suggestions :)

"Freedom is a good thing" seems a little weak, How about "Freedom is a beautiful thing?"

You could pronounce Niniveh Nini-vay and it would rhyme with the lines before and after it.

There's a lot in this lyric - something for everyone LOL. Some lines I find problematic from a philosophical point of view, but that's not what we're her for. It makes sense, coming from your perspective, which is one shared by many.

I particularly like the "throw-away hearts" line!

  • Yes, this is much more listenable to me then the others. Seems like you are listening closely that what you're doing. Maybe try to get rid of that last "hokey" guitar sweeps sound (which has been drastically reduced from the others) and make the melody even more melodic, which you can do, and I think it would be vey pleasurable to listen to.

  • Seems we've become a nation of throw-away hearts
    Just a nation of throw-away-hearts
….yes, I like this one and these lines especially.

  • So I'm interpreting this as: freedom is good, but needs to be guided by morality. Is that right? If so, then the message is coming thru.

The Bridge seemed a bit out of left field to me.I get there's a link there, but the switch to relationships felt like a jump, though I saw it's a part Barry especially liked.

The chorus feels particularly strong, and that's the core of the song, so that's good.

Not necessarily an easy topic to write on. Good job on it.

  • @RainyDayMan AbSOlutely, you got it and I couldn't have thought to say it that way myself: "Freedom is good, but needs to be guided by morality". Dead on!

So far as the bridge, it's really about the breaking up of family and how easy it is these days go get a divorce; no-fault divorce (if memory serves, we have President Reagan to thank for that) and that kind of freedom has hurt the family unit terribly. Thus, 'throw-away hearts'.

And yes, this one was a bit tricky to write; been hacking away at it for the past 3-4 weeks now. I didn't want to get too specific, yet wanted to state my point strongly.

Thank you for your kind thoughts, Owen,

    Renee
