I HAD MY HEART SET ON YOU
Your lips touch your glass of wine
There's a sadness in your smile
So I tell you I'm going to be be fine
It's just going to take a little while
But as I watch you take that last sip of Prosecco
I feel as empty as your glass
I'm not ready for you to be an echo
Bouncing off the walls of my past
Do I hold you, do I kiss you, do I say how much I'll miss you
I have no clue what to do
Because, you see, silly me
I had my heart set on you
Come here and let me hold you
Hug you maybe just a little bit too tight
Door closing, the air is cold
I see you turning off the light
I throw my car and my life into reverse
It's a road I've been along
A few times now, I guess I'm just another verse
In an old, familiar song
I want to turn the car around but I keep driving across town
I have no clue what to do
Because, you see, silly me
I had my hear set on you
Don't talk to me of other fish in the sea
I don't want them swimming up to me
I have no clue what to do
I had my heart set on you.

"I had my heart set on you" is so evocative, and I love the gentle sadness of the lyric. There's a real feeling of smiling through the tears. You also paint the picture of the person dying being more composed and accepting, and only worried about their partner with barely a word.
The music is a little upbeat for me. That may be quite deliberate to match that sense of trying to be happy through the sadness, but I feel like it might work better slower and more melancholic.
That said, the admixture of love and pain hits home. It's a good song.
As a minor thing, this line feels a bit cramped:
It's just going to take a little while
Maybe: but it'll take a little while or: It's going to take a little while
I'm less keen on the Prosecco / echo rhyme at the end of the line because for me it leans more into that comedic style, but again, that might be quite deliberate for contrast. It may well be just personal preference.
Overall, I think the lyric is great, but I would make it sadder musically.

Hi @OnlyGavin
A very pretty song telling a sad story that I suspect many of us can see a lot of ourselves in. I enjoyed the rhyme scheme. Your vocal is beautifully restrained and the guitars (especially the solo) are delightful and very tasteful. A lovely clean recording too.
Great work.

Thanks Owen. It's not necessarily about someone dying, although something definitely is. I take your point about the speed. I didn't want to go too slow and melancholic as I was going for putting a brave face on it (or at least trying to) rather than lamenting.

Hola @OnlyGavin
Your lyrics are always beautiful but this one today is wonderful, I've been moved, a very beautiful love song, friendship in love!!! The cadence you have chosen is perfect for the story.

Thank you for your kind words, icystorm. Sorry it took mew so long to respond. I have broken my arm, which means I can't spend too much time at the computer as I'm supposed to keep it elevated. It also makes it hard to listen to other folks' songs because it's surprisingly difficult to get my headphones on with one hand!

This is so sad yet relatable. It feels so real and true. I love the story on SC about this song came to be and it makes sense how it feels so real.
I love your funny side, but this too is awesome. I enjoyed the listen very much!
When will you be at Madison Square Garden? I tried to find your touring schedule on your website, but don't see it listed. Will you be playing with other bands? I'm interested as it is not too far from me.

Thanks Elvis. That line took a bit of work as it doesn't fit neatly into the melody but I thought wandering a bit off piste somehow worked and injected a little variety for added interest.

Thanks Andrea. This one pretty much wrote itself from real life. That's probably what makes it feel real.
Madison Square Garden canceled on us. Apparently they double booked us on the same night as Billy Joel.🙄
