Covers and Copyright

Found a Youtube video on the legal position of posting covers on Youtube and Audio Streaming Services.

Whilst this is US Centric, I think it may be of value to members:

  • Extremely valuable. I've unsuccessfully sought this information for years. And here it is all in one place. AND. . . a lot has changed (probably for the better) since I started looking (according to this video.) THANK YOU.

  • Interesting stuff. I spent a lot of my gigging life playing covers. Not that I ever really wanted to but, unless you were famous, it was the only way to get regular paid work here in the UK...still very much the case today.

The venues had to a have a PRS license (Performing Rights Society), and they still do. They do the business of making sure the writers, creator's, publlshers and who knows who else, get paid royalties.

I'm pretty sure that similar arrangements exist in other countries.

Putting out covers on social media is a whole different ball game which I know very little about. For this reason, I've kept well clear. Also, I'd sooner put out my own creations now, having spent half my life playing covers...many of which I hate!!! 'Don't tell my heart...my achy breaky heart..' and all that **** !!😁

  • Not that this concerns me, but I have a friend that does cover songs on YT that I can share this with. The attorney certainly appears to know her stuff. Thank you for posting, Owen.
