lyrics SS : music/vocals Ai
Hernan Cortes was the leader of the Spanish expeditionary force in 1619 that invaded, what is now Mexico, and consequently destroyed a whole civilization, the Aztecs.
[intro]
[verse 1]
Through jungles and swamps
Over mountains and the plains
The plague of god spread over
The lands called the Spanish Main
verse 2
The natives fell to the ground in awe
Shiny creatures half-man half-beast
Dogs that spat fire and thunder
The devils had come for a feast
chorus
They were savages and disbelievers
On whose bodies the horses trod
The chosen took the slaves and gold
In the name of the one true god
verse 3
For centuries they plundered and raped
First the people and then the land
Breaking the will and backs of the natives
Smashing their gods into the sand
chorus
They were savages and disbelievers
On whose bodies the horses trod
The chosen took the slaves and gold
In the name of the one true god
bridge
When the conquerors left these lands,
cities razed and turned to dust
Empires crushed, and buried in the sand,
millions dead for gold and lust.
chorus
They were savages and disbelievers
On whose bodies the horses trod
The chosen took the slaves and gold
In the name of the one true god
outro
The chosen took the slaves and gold
In the name of the one true god

There's some nice strong lines in there like:
The plague of god spread over
The lands called the Spanish Main
Like this too:
Dogs that spat fire and thunder
I'm guessing that's cannon rather than muskets?
Disease killed most of the natives I think.
I'm wondering how this would come out written from the perspective of one of the Spanish crew. Not change the message, just the viewpoint. The narrative style feels a little history book to me.

I think an individual's POV would be too narrow and contained to encompass the message contained in the song.

You may well be right!

"The plague of god spread over
The lands called the Spanish Main"
That's a hard-hitting line, there, and I like it a lot. Good lyrics.

It’s kinda funny …. During my history studies at university we got exactly this Szenario. I think it was called: conquest of Mexico out of Aztec and Spanish perspective. We got an old Aztec source as well as the diary of Cortes and his men to read and to compare.
Very interesting but the timeframe and the location was hell. 15 weeks, the last class of the week, late in the afternoon and with 50 ppl in a room with no windows…yuck I remember that very well.
Anyways, the lyrics are good 😊0
Howdy, Stranger!
