THE GIG DRIVER BLUES

Well he’s a rollin’

On the road again

He’s rolling

On the road again

He’s gotta swing

By the airport

For a carload of friends

And he’s rolling

On the road again

Eating lunch

At a stoplight

While the motor runs

He’s trying

To pay for the good life

But he’s never had

Time for one

‘Cause he’s rolling

Rolling

On the Road again

He’s rolling

On the road again

He gotta swing by

The warehouse

To get your odds and ends

And he’s rolling

On the road again

The smell of

French fries and pizza

Filling up his car

He’s trying to catch him a good life

But he hasn’t got very far

And he’s rolling

Rolling

Livin’ on the road

He’s rolling

With a heavy load

2 kids

And an ex wife

In an unhappy home

And he’s rolling

With a heavy load

Nobody ever bothers

To ask him how he feels

It’s kinda hard to catch a good life

From behind the wheel

And he’s rolling, still rolling

He was rolling

Through the Great Divide

He was rolling

On the day that he died

Now he makes

His deliveries

Faster the speed of light

And he’s rolling

Through the Great Divide

Rolling.

  • A well trodden path, but this bought a real smile to my face. Proper rock n roll and I love it. I'd love to have a couple of beers in a bar and enjoy this played by a full band. I'd be on my feet. Great guitar playing and cool vocals. Good bass playing too. I love it Pete.😀

Thanks Chris. It doesn’t sound like it but I had to put a lot of work into this one to get the instruments not to walk all over each other. I’m finally doing a little research on how to EQ vocals so that you can crank them up along with the bass and they don’t drown each other out.
The lead/solo guitar with the tweed breakup tone was meant to be a place saver proof of concept that I wound up keeping. It’s all one take/first take. I recently went to a stones concert and noticed that Ron and Keith pretty much stepped in and out the whole time throughout songs and the mixer was pushing up and down guitars during the song. That’s how I handled that track on this song.
I recently acquired a pair of old Mackie HR824’s that have helped immensely in getting the balance right for the car
  • I can well believe that it took you some time to create space for everything in the mix. This kind of music can sound deceptively simple, but to get it right you have to understand the dynamics, and it's not always easy to get that right in a home studio environment. I know because a lot of what I create has a similar background. I grew up listening to likes of The Stones, plus a few late 60's/early 70's American rock bands, and it's all about feel. For me, Ron Wood & Keith Richards are great rock n roll guitarists so I'm definitely onboard! You've done a great job Pete.😀

  • That's foot stomping music! Thoroughly enjoyable Pete!

  • That's real good , ole school rock , nice job

  • This is a really great track. That chorus (he's rollin', on the road again) is great.

I might tighten this up into a 3:20 length song - I love the guitar solos at end but it detracts from the really great pop chorus - think of it as the single version lol

I like finishing up "faster than the speed of light" - maybe some sort of Steve Miller-Threshhold type effect to pause on then take off into the guitar solo section.

Damn good lyrics with good rhythm all the way through not to mention a well deserved tribute to all the truckers keeping the delivery on schedule.
