Challenge

Rather than competitions, I think that challenges are a good thing on forums such as this. No winners or losers, but something to inspire musicians/songwriters to maybe step outside their comfort zone and be inventive.

It's been quiet on here just lately so maybe now isn't the right time, but I'd be interested to hear any suggestions for such a challenge. Mine would be something along the lines of set of song titles picked out of a hat (or something a bit more 2024!!) and handed out at random to participants. I took part in something similar a couple of years back on one of the other forums and it turned out to be a lot of fun and resulted in some rather good songs too.

I'd be happy to organise something along these lines, but there has to be enough people onboard to make it happen. Tell me what you think.

In the meantime, I'd like to do my bit to get things moving on TSF, so maybe the first challenge is to pass the word around and remind everyone about this great forum.😀

I think this is a good idea, Chris. If you organize it, I will gladly participate. Most people on the site produce full songs, but a couple (or maybe more) don't. Maybe you could have a phased challenge where people post their song's lyrics in phase 1, and then post the entire song in phase 2. That way, some of the lyrics-only writers may participate. But, if there are no lyrics-only writers who want to participate, skip that part and make the challenge about full songs only. I think the songs in the challenge should be complete demos or better, not partially-made snippets of an idea.

I agree. The absence of @Andrea, @MoraAmaroLaLoba, and @ReneAsologuitar has been noticed and keenly felt. I may have overlooked some others too. Some of them may have stopped posting after the prolonged outage late last year. I hope they all return because they were great contributors to the site and made positive contributions. I enjoyed their music, and hope to again on this site. Of course, I still enjoy their music on Soundcloud and YouTube.

    Cheers,

    Joseph

  • Good to hear your thoughts Joseph. Your ideas make sense to me. Yes, I think it is too quiet to get such a challenge up and running right now, but it's food for thought. I'm happy to organize something when things pick up a bit.

The absence of some regulars is unfortunate. The outage you mention may have been a part of it, but I also think that these things tend to go in cycles. People come and go. I visit a couple of other similar forums, and their traffic seems to go up and down in the same way. Hopefully a few new contributors will come onboard soon and help turn things around. Owen did a great job rebuilding the site a while back, and I think it's by far the easiest to navigate. We need to pass the word around.😀

'...I think it is too quiet to get such a challenge up and running right now...'

I agree. I think a minimum of 10 commitments to a challenge is a baseline for organizing one, but that's just my opinion. I'll participate with however you decide to organize it in the future, even if it's fewer than 10 involved.

I fully agree, and kudos to him for doing so.

Hi I would be up to doing something. I quite like the idea of having a song of the month, where everyone puts in one song and people vote- three points for favourite, two points for second place and one for third.

Or maybe a knock out song competition where two songs are drawn against each other and the one with the most votes goes through to the next round , until you are left with two in the end against each other.

Thought of an F.A Cup type thing..

Another idea, ( don't know if people would go for it) A format is decided , number of verses and everyone contributes one line to a song .

I'm not a musician, so how about a lyrics only competition.

  • Or maybe we could pair up lyricists with musicians and set them some sort of challenge. That's worked well in the past. Thankfully things are now starting to pick up here again. Maybe when there's a few more folks back on board we can get something rolling.
