Noah

A spoken word meditation on moral complicity and divine justice drawn from Genesis framing Noah as a though experiment.

There are 4 different bibles I used for research.

[Intro]

I was recently reminded of the story of Noah.

Noah was given a task by God to build an Ark

Here's the kicker, Noah knows why God wants to build it.

His choice is to either defy God and not build the Ark

Or betray his people and build the Ark knowing the outcome

[Verse 1]

We know the story, Noah doesn't defy God and builds the Ark.

He also doesn't warn his people, there is no mention of that.

So, as he's building the Ark, with that knowledge in his head,

What must be his thoughts, are they tortured or at peace.

The Ark is built, God is pleased, the plan is set in motion.

Rains for forty days and nights and as God stated -

"And I will blot out every offspring which I have made from the

Face of all the earth.", came to pass.

[Verse 2]

What must it have been like inside the Ark as it rose, slowly

Knowing that with every cubit the Ark rose, humanity perished.

But Noah and his immediate family is safe, but not his relatives

Because they were mixed in with the sinners as a group

For one hundred and fifty days, the high water remained

Then after the seventh month, the waters receded for

three more months. Forty days later, Noah opened the window

And sent a Raven out, then the same dove weeks apart until

The dove never returned, telling Noah the earth was dry.

[Bridge]

I can only imagine what was going through Noah's

Mind when he finally left the Ark and there was nothing.

All of humanity was gone, did that weigh heavy on his mind?

Maybe not, maybe he rationalized it and was honored

That God chose him to rebuild society, because as a thanks,

Noah built an altar giving an offering to God, who, again

Was pleased, but why did this omnipotent being, who created

the universe and all that it contains, decided to refrain

From doing that again, it's not because of human emotion

As to reduce God to human standards, is a disservice,

It is God.

[Outro]

The story of Noah is an interesting thought experiment,

Had Noah defied God, what would have God done? It could

have been anybody, But God chose somebody, Noah.

Was it because he knew Noah to be compliant, as that doesn't

seem to be a random choice, it seemed deliberate.

In the end, God decided not to "smite" humanity,

Again, Why?
