See the dude in the cowboy hat belly up at the bar?
e just lost some pretty little thing who dropped him for a car.
So, there he sits, taking hits, crying in his beer,
drinking rounds to drown the hounds he cannot bear to hear.
That’s how it goes.
There’s just no use in crying.
You can lay the blame; but, in your heart, you’d know you’re lying.
That’s how it goes.
You may sink, or you might swim, but if you can’t get wet,
best not jump in
Take the old man in the souped-up Vet with that darling by his side,
You gotta wonder who’s the fool, taking who for a ride.
These are the days, anyways, sign me up for some
pretty words from pretty birds, with lovely silver tongues
well….
That’s how it goes.
There’s just no use in crying.
You can play the game; but, in your heart, you’d know you’re lying.
That’s how it goes.
You may sink or you might swim, but if you can't get wet,
best not jump in
Now, there's a guy who gets it right, you won't see him fall apart.
He’s the kind that will keep his head with matters of the heart.
He keeps it cool. He’s no fool. He knows, with romance,
It’s better to love and lose, than to never give love a chance.
That’s how it goes.
There’s just no use in crying.
You can play the game, no extra point for trying.
That’s how it goes.
You may sink, or you might swim, but if you don’t get wet,
you’ll never win.

Cynical, slightly bitter perspective, but still with a hint of hope in that third verse. It's got a strong mood going.
I like both the music and the lyric, but I'd like more variation in the music between the verse and the chorus. Maybe try taking the melody up in lines 2 and 5 of the chorus?
And don't forget to leave feedback for others while you are here 😁

Nice! Vocals sound really dry (not bad in and of itself) and I can't decide whether a little reverb or delay might elevate this...maybe a harmony in the chorus? maybe a full-on band to kick it in gear, a la steve earle. either way i like your voice and the recording sounds really good.

Hi @IronKnee
A catchy song. A great one for open mics I'm sure. I can hear a crowd sing the "That's how it goes" hook. I agree with the previous responses that this could definitely be taken up a level with a band sound kicking into gear after the first chorus. A nice nice muddy e guitar, big bass and a steady kit would thrive on this song with some backing vocal adding an extra punch and depth at selected points. *
A really good listen. You've got a real talent.

Hey there Rainy.......thanks for stopping by...........................and I always post comments with others ;-)
Thanks, JR...................nice to meet you. This is intentionally a 1+1 bare minimum demo for a little songs contest. I agree, a full band would definitely help this to rock.
I appreciate it Crackin'. But I am a sadly limited man. My greatest hope is that the writing shines, despite my recordings and performances ;-)
Thanks for stopping by.........I'll see you around the boards!

The song has the imprint of the guitar along with the voice, of course I could tell you that you could add this or that, perhaps another reverb that enhances the voice but without separating the aura of the guitar. I liked the lyrics a lot! @IronKnee

Little harmony in chorus would help, Yup way it goes . Good job

Good song, Tom! I liked your acoustic guitar strumming. The lyrics were cool too. The vibe of the song sort reminds me of Bob Dylan. I enjoyed listening. Good stuff, man!

Great stuff Tom. As you know I'm a fan of your songs and this is as good as any. I'd really enjoy this if I saw you play it live in a bar somewhere. No crits from me. I enjoyed this😀

It's a good 1+1 performance. I think that your vocals add character to the song. I enjoyed the listen.
The lyrics have a message, which for the most part seem excellent. I'm just not sure why this guy wants to sign up for such nonsense. Seems to me he understands what is a better choice.

"These are the days, anyways, sign me up for some
pretty words from pretty birds, with lovely silver tongues" .......
......This is a bit of sarcasm aimed at the mentality of the days in which we live.
Thanks for stopping by, Andrea, for the listen....and for the comment 😎

Iron knee, I like the overall feel of the song. I do think there are a few cliche lines that you may look to change but there are also some brilliant lines that I love in it. “You gotta wonder who’s the fool taking who for a ride” killer line! Overall very good!1

Hey there MP.....thanks for listening and commenting. And yea, it's a challenge to keep away from all cliche's. I would venture to say that it is almost imposable 😋
I'm glad you enjoyed this....and, thanks, again!
