Verse 1

I showed up late to the pearly gates

Smelled like smoke and bad decisions

Saint Peter flipped through my paperwork

Said, “Son, you made this interesting”

Every broken promise, every sideways lie

Every bridge I burned for pride

He said, “Take a breath—this might take a while”

I said, “Buddy, I got time”

Pre-Chorus

He said, “You got anything you wanna say?”

I said, “Yeah… I tried my best some days”

Chorus

When God judged me, He didn’t yell

Didn’t ring no fire alarm bell

He said, “You loved, you lost, you learned a bit

You screwed it up, but not like them”

He closed the book, gave me a look

Said, “Son, I’ve heard worse”

Verse 2

He asked about the women and the nights

I chose the bottle over home

Asked about the words I should’ve said

And the ones I carved in stone

I said, “I wasn’t brave, I wasn’t clean

I wasn’t what I swore I’d be

But I never kicked a man when he was down

And I never blamed You for me”

Pre-Chorus

He said, “That counts for more than you might know”

I said, “Guess I’m glad I showed”

Chorus

When God judged me, He shook His head

Smiled like He’d been here before

Said, “I’ve seen saints do worse than this

With a Bible and a sword”

He said, “You walked a line, you crossed a few

But hell ain’t callin’ after you”

He closed the book, gave me a look

Said, “Son, I’ve heard worse”

Bridge

He said, “You ain’t a hero, you ain’t a fraud

You’re just a man with a heavy heart”

Said, “Grace ain’t clean, forgiveness ain’t soft

It’s just a chance to restart”

Last Chorus

When God judged me, He didn’t preach

Didn’t ask me who I hate

He said, “You paid for most of what you broke

The rest I’ll waive”

He pointed past the guilt and dirt

Said, “Go on—try heaven first”

I walked on through, thinkin’ maybe I’m

Not as bad as it hurts

Tag / Outro

Yeah, I’ve done wrong

But I’ve heard worse

    i agree. Great hook.

i like this confession line :

    I said, “I wasn’t brave, I wasn’t clean

    I wasn’t what I swore I’d be

But I never kicked a man when he was down

And I never blamed You for me”

Elvis, I think I had said you must have lost your religion a song or two back but your might have a little still left in there.

    Good write.

Ahh , I always make fun of God , he made me , he must have a sense of humor , if ya think about it , he's heard far worse

    Thanks

  • I like the "interesting" and "decision" rhyme - this is a great tune - I'm a sucker for outlaw country

Well I've heard worse , lol . I bet he has

  • Interesting story!

    I really like these lines:

Said, “I’ve seen saints do worse than this

With a Bible and a sword”

I think if you're doing a live version of this you need a pause after son as in "Son .... I've heard worse"

I don't like the decisions / interesting rhyme and "bad decisions" feels like too many syllables there.

    But overall it's got legs.

  • I’ve hung around a lot of bad men , so I’m sure he’s heard worse
    Thanks
