Molly

The last song I intend to share. It's about my good school friend who shone so very bright, for far too short a time. Guess her name? 🤣

I know some won't appreciate the spoken word (if you can make it out) but, I'll never change my style.

Think of poor, Molly

Who died on this day

Just 8 in age

When pulled from the stage

No bow before leaving the show

She played with a boy who liked her sweet smile

He admired her zest for life

But no children for Molly, no dressing in style

No husband to call her wife

The boy saw a soul both wise and young

He saw in her the answer to why

She gave him a present only friendship can give

But he never got to say goodbye

So I say to you now. Molly my sweet girl

I loved you before love made sense

You showed me the way though you never did say

Why you shone so bright and intense.

Those last painful days, no hair nor hope

As the talking all turned to tears.

Please know that I love you but in life I must cope

So I lock you away with my fears

So I think of poor Molly just once a year

When I throw torture to the fates

Though in quiet moments, whether worry or cheer

I think of our once yearly dates

its Molly right ?, Sounds good man , is that 3/4 time ?

  • I don't know if I've said this before, but some of your songs sound almost like they belong on The Small Faces Ogdens album from the late 60's. Very quirky and off the wall. That's a huge compliment by the way. It's one of my favourite albums of all time. I'm showing my age here - it's a bit obscure for younger musicians and their success didn't really go much beyond the UK. Anyway, I really like this track😀

  • This one is clearly very personal and intense. As such, I think only you can say how it should be. But it paints a picture of innocence and loss.

  • I hadn't really thought about it @ElvisNash, but yeah it's 3/4 - thinking about it that's probably why is didn't sit in the DAW very well. I should probably pay more heed to what time I'm writing in!

That raises as interesting thought as Blue Lights was also 3/4 - I wonder if I tend to write 'serious songs' in 3/4 or if it's just a coincidence...

Yeah been million of hits 3/4 time , You just don't hear them much anymore along with a modulation up a key or half

    3/4 is tricky though

I like the story, it's atypical!!! In your presentation you talk about the style in which you sing... Why would you have to change it? Your music wouldn't be the same if it didn't have your voice singing the story!!!

Childhood loves are secrets that are carried in the heart for a long time, poor Molly, without time to say goodbye...

I really like the arrangement, it is a deep backing, your work always has that color of a pictorial story, of a landscape film, so I can only tell you that I liked it, it is not a conventional song to which you have given the perfume of a story . nice one @CorkingCrackBand

  • I went through a period, early on in my songwriting process, largely when getting used to playing keys, of writing lots of waltzes so 3/4 is no stranger to me. I think The Queen On Her Throne is also 3/4 with a turn into 5/4 in the bridge halfway through. Scratch, that, the 5/4 bridge is in They're Coming!! I can't even remember my own songs these days.

Thank you @MoraAmaroLaLoba, oddly I thought this was a more conventional song and lyric than usual - goes to show what I know! 🤣

I'm really please you liked it.

All the best and thanks for listening and commenting to all who have.

I forget em just as quick CC, if your writing 4 a month , its a blurr

  • A blur? That's life. Have a respectful eye on the past, a cautious eye on the future and let the rest of you embrace the now.

Blimey, I talk some old tosh sometimes...

  • Not enough bs that I talk CC

  • I like this, CCB, but then I always enjoy your distinctive style. The jaunty rhythm does kind of jar with the sad story, which, to me, gave it a kind of nursery rhyme feeling. Not sure if that's what you were going for.

  • Hi @OnlyGavin

Thanks. Yeah, I was going for a blend of a melancholy sadness with the type of song a primary school music teacher would break out on wet lunch breaks. It was intended to evoke a feeling of innocence and loss. It felt appropriate to me but I know it may seem jarring. Horses for courses and all that. 👍️

  • I really like this song - sad, charming, folksy, personal, beautiful. There's something universal about it too. We can all relate to loss on some level. Thank you for posting. It took me somewhere I didn't expect.

    Cheers,

    Pauline

  • It has a very raw and personal feel. Super sad and beautiful. I was totally absorbed in the story and song. Well done!

I'm cheating and would like to comment on your closed thread- recent post in the Muse. I was blown away by this song. I am sorry that the lyrics are personal to your family. The song is intriguing and entertaining.

I have enjoyed your songs so much! Take care of yourself. Be well and hit me up anytime. I would love to collaborate one day :)

Or just send a PM and let me know how you are doing. I'll miss your music!

  • Hi @highvibrational

Thank you. I always like hearing 'personal' songs that transcend the individual experience into a more universal message so I particularly appreciate your observation.

    Hi @Andrea

Thank you - on both song counts. 😁 I'm particularly pleased that Black Sheep worked for you - though it does need me to sort the mix, to be fair. It's a very 'me' song in many ways so it bodes well that you like it. Moreover, thank you for always being kind and thoughtful in your responses - you often make me think about aspects of my songs (and other peoples) that I hadn't considered.

I have a few collabs in the making and offing so you may yet see me skulking round the forums. 😁👍️

Thanks to all for listening and commenting,

  • The last song I intend to share.

Hopefully not! I enjoy your songs and hope you continue to share more, CCB. This one was obviously a personal song about your childhood loss. I can certainly understand and relate. Regarding the song, I enjoyed listening. I particularly liked the acoustic guitar playing. The music and vocals were good, and the production was clear as usual. Nice job! Thanks for sharing. 🙂

  • very touching song. really conveyed your emotions. Can't add anything re: production...sounded great! Thanks for posting

  • Hi @icystorm

Thanks for the acoustic guitar compliment - I'm very aware, as a self taught musician, that I'm not terribly good - focusing my energies into writing rather than improving my musicianship, so it's good to know I didn't let myself down with my playing being quite 'up front'. If you're on Soundcloud look me up and I'll follow you and your progress there. If not, PM here if you ever want a chinwag and hopefully I'll get an email and catch it. 👍️

    Hi @jrandolph

Thanks, it was an odd song to record as originally I intended it as a quick 1+1 and then I decided to add one more instrument and one more and... and it wound up as it is now. I managed to hold myself back from 'full production' where I throw everything at it and loose the intimacy of the vocal. Hopefully I judged it right.

    Thanks for listening and commenting.
