Philosophy in three acts

Lyrics. Me. Music - Suno

https://suno.com/s/KhPFYDB3I8BCOuqV

Verse 1 - Rene Descartes

Verse 2 - Russel Bertrand

Verse 3 - David Chalmers

The two bridges are actual thought experiments,

[Intro]

What I think, is not unique, no, but actually

Recycled ideologies of ancient philosophies

[Verse 1]

I think, therefore I am, and I am certain

That I am a rational thinking thing,

I exist, making me something, not nothing

If I'm not reasoning, then I'm not existing.

But I have thoughts, emotions, dreams, and

I perceive those corporeal things that

Are known to me as truths, even if the

Cunning deceiver fills my mind with doubts.

Objectively I see a block of wax as that,

Realized in my mind, not by imagination.

[Bridge]

Suppose for a moment, my brain's in a vat

Or my sensory organs removed, leaving my

brain intact. My sensory data is fed

by wires, and all that, regardless,

Of the input, would it still matter?

[Verse 2]

What matters is this table before me,

The light reflecting off the glossy

Brown surface, full of imperfections

Informs my mind what I need to know.

But my senses tell a different story,

Discrepancies, between reality and illusion

Distorting my judgement of what the color

Actually is. Objectively, I know that

Brown is brown, but for my subjective self,

I cannot say that statement is actually true,

For what is color, anyways, for that matter?

[Bridge]

Mary lives in a room of blacks and whites

She learned what colors are, not from sight

But from all the books that filled her head

Then one day, she saw the actual color red

[Verse 3]

Browns and reds are colors we can define,

The table is brown and the tomato red,

Yet we do not know why browns and reds are

For that matter, what is, is? how do we

Measure that which cannot be? Is, is qualia,

Alluded to for centuries, I sense and feel,

But why? I know things of which to be true,

Then again, what are truths, that is a hard

Question without definition or solution.

I am a conscious entity, that exists, or do I?

Consciousness isn't an illusory state of

Being, so, why do I experience the way I do?

[Outro]

I think, therefore I am, but why am I?

This I ponder, whilst staring at my navel.

    @bhengen

Well constructed and presented, the choice of music and vocals is (?) excellent, if indeed I heard it!

Very good selection of philosophical questions posed. I personally try to not let the why's get in the way of the whoa's!

Applaud the concept, as usual challenging the accepted norm with alternatives. love it.

Always rely on you Bill to break the monotony.

  • Thanks, sid. I had Jack Kerouac, Steve Allen, in my head as I was writing this. The concept was the mind and consciousness from 3 different points of view. Trying to steer clear of existentialism, as we both know, is a completely different subject altogether :)

Appreciate the inclusion into your existentialism clique, thoroughly undeserved I assure you. My knowledge of existentialism doesn't extend beyond that of Kim Jong iL and Tom Waits!

Someone on this forum once said, "You don't always need to understand the message, to appreciate the song."

I like the concept you've given to these three ways of experiencing one's reality.

Human thought is a weightless fuel that grows as it's used. It's inexhaustible and can take us to incredible places.

Philosophy has filled me with conclusions, ever since I was little, conclusions that change in certain aspects but remain the same because we are the same human being.

For me, philosophy gives wings and takes them away.

  • Like all your songs , You're way over my head

But your not concerned with commercial songs

  • Thanks mora, that means a lot coming from you. I agree with your wings analogy, it keeps one grounded and humble.

  • no, because we both know that I have a rats chance in hell this will go anywhere, but then again, there is a huge experimental / prog rock market.. just need to get a youtube page going and see what happens :). .thanks for the comment.

Gettin a Youtube page always involves money for promotion , or it goes nowhere . And now you have to jump thru hoops to get verified thru Google , it's a big hassle . Now if your past IT guy you might have better luck then me , studying gurus to get the page off the ground . You also need to set up a Adsense account with Youtube , If by some miracle you get it to take off . alot of YouTubers make a lot of money , if you can figure it out

  • There are many truths in your words. for now, I'll just keep writing and assembling a body of work. in the meant time, I'll beat my foot with a hammer as it most likely gives me a better visceral experience than setting up a youtube channel:)

Most these Youtube channels that do well are live people talking to people , I never could figure it out

But some make a good living off it

    This guy does pretty good

Then I think you would fail , There all great speakers

  • You should pitch this to William Shatner.

I like the lyric and what Suno did with it. A kind of slow rap, or the kind of thing you might have heard some bloke in a black polo neck deliver in a smoky club in Greenwich Village in the 60s.

Any reason behind the inverting of Bertrand Russell's name? Or is it me that's inverted? Or am I a table? An upside-down table called Bertrand? I think I'm a table, therefore I am a table.

Where did I put my meds?

  • I thought this sounds surprisingly good. It's well written, but I wasn't sure how enjoyable it was going to be, but I was pleasantly surprised.

I wonder if it would be better or worse having 3 different singers, 1 for each POV?

I like the loose rhyming scheme you're using. In such a dense philosophical treatise it's impressive you squeezed that in there.

    Innovative as always!

  • Thanks for the comment. The beat generation was what I am going for with Jack Kerouac and steven allen. How do you know you're not a table who imagines they are human.. Meds? you mean like the funny blue and red pills that I'm never sure which to take :)

  • Thanks Owen, I can imagine that you brace yourself before opening my posts, as you never know what you're going to get :)

The 3 distinct vocals is a great idea as it will better separate the 3 verses and make them stand on their own as intended.

Definitely a learning experience, as I've never heard of the two thought experiments until now....

Not really a fan of the other two guys, but I am of Chalmers. chalmers had a Rock band u know, he was the singer and they had songs about about consciousness lol

There's a guy named Donald Hoffman who will blow your mind, and has already turned physics upside down. He's very present on YouTube.

Songs need an emotional core to be effective. Which is hard with subjects that are about rationality and logic.

    But why not go there?
