The Goat, The Gnu & The Tumbleweed

Something very silly to start the week.

THE GOAT, THE GNU & THE TUMBLEWEED

When a goat and his hungry friends have stripped a mountain bare

He simply shrugs his shoulders, all four

And moves with his colleagues to another mountain, where

Of nutritious grass to eat there’s plenty more

And I am a goat, just ask anyone

They’ll tell you I don’t hang around when once a job is done

I’d speak of this some more, but I really must be gone

It’s nice to meet you – so long.

It’s nice to meet you

But I must be on my way

There’s somewhere that I have to be

Though where I couldn’t say

It’s a lovely place you have here

I like it just fine

But my mind has bought a ticket

And I can’t be left behind

There’s no point in going back to where you last saw a gnu

In fact, there may be danger even trying

For the gnu will be gone replaced perhaps by a new gnu

But also perhaps by a lion

I resemble a gnu maybe more than you k-new

The gnu and I keep moving. It’s what we do

And I’ll be leaving again in a minute or t-wo

It’s nice to meet you – so long

It’s nice to meet you

But I must be on my way

There’s somewhere that I have to be

Though where I couldn’t say

It’s a lovely place you have here

I like it just fine

But my mind has bought a ticket

And I can’t be left behind

A tumbleweed may tumble into town but he won’t linger

Longer than he must to not seem rude

The tumbleweed’s humble needs can be counted on one finger

The wind at his back and life is good

The chosen occupation of this undemanding vegetation

Is a leisurely peregrination through the deserts of the nation

A plant without a plan or specific destination,

It’s nice to meet you – so long

It’s nice to meet you

But I must be on my way

There’s somewhere that I have to be

Though where I couldn’t say

It’s a lovely place you have here

I like it just fine

But my mind has bought a ticket

And I can’t be left behind

@OnlyGavin - Your song really filled up my morning and has put a smile on my face :) So so much fun, loved it, smiling all the way.

The part with the "gnu" was pretty cool and the closing line - my mind has bought a ticket and I can't be left behind leaves so many possible interpretations.

Definitely a song to come back to to cheer me up from time to time :)

I'm not sure I understand the lyrics, but I love it.

I also I agree that the "gnu" part is by far the best part of the song. The more "gnu" rhymes you can pull off the better the song will be received by the public.

  • Yes, good fun.

My favorite part was the Tumbleweed verse. Who can resist "The tumbleweed’s humble needs"?

Excellent song Gavin, a song for all ages and times. Kind of song that transcends generations, I hope so anyway.

Wonderful work, thanks to you and your friends.

P.S., consider changing the title to the Gnu Song, bit like "Escape" was known more famously as "the Pina Colada song."

  • @arnabs Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for listening.

@schmalex Yes, the word gnu is just fun to say or sing. Add to that the fact that a gnu is a pretty funny looking beast and it's hard not to smile 😄

@RainyDayMan That verse may be one of the silliest things I've written and that may be the silliest rhyme. I'm strangely proud of it LOL.

@sidshovel Glad you enjoyed it. I'm not sure about calling it the Gnu Song, although you are absolutely right that people do refer to it as exactly that. That title would unfairly discriminate against goats and tumbleweeds. Also, there is a great song by Flanders and Swan, not so well known these days, concerning a gnu, which could more justly claim that title. The original title for this one was "Nice to Meet You - So Long," which captures what the song is about, but I thought the current title would be more intriguing.

  • That verse may be one of the silliest things I've written and that may be the silliest rhyme. I'm strangely proud of it LOL.

    As you should be!
