lyrics SS : music/vocals Ai

[verse 1]

Sisters in black, daren't turn their back,

stare at the chapel's chimney stack.

Cardinals gather, pick the next Pope,

eyes strain, waitin' for the smoke.

[verse 2]

The Cardinal sat, in a sea of red,

this one, afraid to turn his head

Waitin, for the ballots to begin,

he resists, the temptation to grin.

[chorus]

White smoke, over the Sistine,

everyone knows, what it means.

A new Pope has been chosen,

the Cardinals, they have spoken.

[verse 3]

The men in red, the electors,

paid off, there'll be no defectors.

Fairest election, money can buy,

at last, his time had come to try.

[verse 4]

The voting cards, were collected,

they'd say, who'd been elected.

The concave, was just a sham,

money an' power, had picked the man.

[chorus]

White smoke, over the Sistine,

everyone knows, what it means.

A new Pope has been chosen,

the Cardinals, they have spoken.

[bridge]

He opted to be called Pope Paul,

Gods favourite, here on Earth.

It was easy to pronounce,

give the poor, their money's worth.

[final chorus]

White smoke, over the Sistine,

everyone knows, what it means.

A new Pope has been chosen,

the Cardinals, they have spoken.

[outro]

Outside, the sisters fell to their knees,

white smoke, poured out the chimney.

Many Cardinals, they were richer now,

Pope Paul, waved to the crowds below.

  • @sidshovel - that was fast.. body's not cold yet ;).. what is daren't ? Is that a mix of don't dare? like don't dare to turn their back? :)

Other than that, well written :)

    Thanks Bill.

    daren't

    phrase

    1. Contraction of dare not, with a connotation of fear.

No, I didn't make it up.

  • @sidshovel - learn something new every day :)

  • Bit of a cynical take on conclave! Certainly a vivid picture you've painted.

I notice this is about Pope Paul (one of them!) rather than the late Pope Francis.

Not sure who will enjoy this one, but it should certainly get some attention!

Thanks RDM, not about any Pope in particular, just a commentary on the Papal election process in particular and the opaqueness of the Vatican in general. More secretive than North Korea! Some songs you can't enjoy, they serve a purpose by making you think!

  • There is so much to love about this song.
    It’s very well written.

“White smoke, over the Sistine” Does this mean smoke and mirrors?

    Favorite verse 3
The men in red, the electors,

    *mic drop*

Great work, Sid. I love ❤️ how you say what you want and mean.

I know you said I'm not allowed to enjoy this but is it OK if I say that I did? Because I did 😄 The AI does a good job with the melody. I'm not sure that I would be quite as totally cynical, but I get what you're saying and there are bound to be earthly influences as well as the spiritual ones, and it all comes together well as a song.

I love the image of the sisters unable to tear their eyes away from the chimney, waiting for that white smoke. A great way to start the song.

My only suggestion (and I'm not sure how easy this is to do with AI) is to correct "concave" to "conclave." It's only one word, but it's an important one in the song and does rather jump out at the listener.

Interesting that Bill hadn't heard the contraction "daren't" before. The word is underlined in red as I type with my laptop set to US English. I often find myself saying things that leave my neighbors scratching their heads LOL.

  • @OnlyGavin - it's not a common word. :)

  • @bhengen Not over here, anyway. Pretty standard on the other side of the pond :)

  • We all know who speaks "proper" english 😉😂

I don’t know if I’m just a language nerd, but I (as an American) had no issue picking up on the fact that daren’t is just a contraction of dare not. Or I don’t know, maybe I’m so used to British culture because of my Beatles fandom that I’ve subconsciously picked up words like that :p.

Anyway, really interesting lyrics Sid. Who knows what goes on behind the scenes with that. It’s probably not as simple as everyone just sits down to vote, but yeah…I guess all we can do is speculate. Like you said, it’s a song that makes you think, and it definitely accomplished that for me 🙂

I agree with @bhengen- It’s not common to me.

But it’s not a big deal, either. Sid nailed it.
  • some of are more linguistically challenged than others. I shall sit in my corner of shame in deep self-reflection 😂😂🤣🤣.

@TammyB - The smoke in the catholic church represents whether or not a new pope was elected. White means yes, black means no.

    @bhengen, @OnlyGavin, @TammyB,@BeatlesFan64,

Thank you all for your comments and suggestions, I appreciate you giving your time to listen and provide feedback.

I am pleased you all found it interesting.

My apologies for the typo in v.4, no excuses, I have corrected it where I can, including the audio files on Audius and SoundCloud.

My thanks once again, it was worth the effort just to use a word Bill @bhengen didn't or daren't know.😮
