Fireworks

It's a lot more melancholy than the title would suggest. I'm still kind of in that folksy phase, so it's in 6/8 with an acoustic heavy arrangement, sort of like my last one. Lyrics inspired by the Japanese fireworks festivals. I also realized after rereading it, that it kind of sounds like 4th of July too, so that's a pretty cool coincidence.

Music and lyrics by Tommy L. Day and the Runaways

(v1)

Fireworks lit up the sky on the night I decided to tell you

A heavenly canvas of light, while we watched from the ground, and I held you

(Chorus)

Ah, midsummer’s night, of magic and mirth

As the trails of the fireworks fell back down to earth

(v2)

Crowds of faces, I can’t recall, yet yours remains ever clear

Holding hands at a festival stall, soaking up the atmosphere

(Chorus)

Ah, midsummer’s night, of magic and mirth

As the trails of the fireworks fell back down to earth

(Bridge)

So long ago, I declared my intention

to love you until the day that I die

Far though you may be, I’m beyond intervention

That promise remains, frozen in time, like the fireworks in the sky

(v3)

When our lips met, I knew it for sure, I’d never give my heart again

A thrill that I’d not known before, nor have I ever since then

(Chorus)

Ah, midsummer’s night of magic and mirth

As the last of the fireworks fell back down to earth

(Outro)

Back down to earth

  • This song gives me a nostalgic feeling. It makes me feel young again.

I love the guitar playing and the lyrics. It is nicely composed in my opinion.

Great work and I can't wait the hear more!

The problem is Tommy, you've set the bar too high. Your previous works and style established an expectation for more of the same and keep 'em comin'! The fifties and sixties genre you perfected and posted has probably developed quite a fan base, myself included.

The change in style and genre is a bit of a jolt and one I'm still struggling to get used to. I see a post by @BeatlesFan64 and click on it quickly with a selfish expectation of more of the same. The new shift is still struggling to dislodge the old style, and I'm loathe to let it go easily.

Having said that, this is a good song with excellent visuals brought on by the use of vivid and beautiful lyrics. I'd probably favour a more simplistic approach using a 1 + 1, singer/guitar, but I do that with most folk songs!

I promise to listen with an open mind, but it's your own fault for spoiling us!

@TammyB Thanks so much! Nostalgia is the name of the game with me, so I’m always glad when I can evoke that feeling in people. Stay tuned for more 🙂

@sidshovel Aw man, this makes it feel like my style is changed forever haha. Rest assured, my Beatley sound isn’t going anywhere! Think of it more as when the Beatles did folksy stuff in Beatles For Sale or Help. The underlying core is still that classic 60s style. I went through a phase of doing jazzy type songs several months ago too, so that stuff just comes and goes, but the core of the BeatlesFan64 style remains!
  • I think this would make a great track for an album rather than a single.

The melody is a bit subtle and takes the odd unexpected turn. It hasn't got the sing-along factor of a hit single, but it rewards the listener.

Loved the harmonies, they're always a feature in your songs.

It's a pretty, gentle, love song that just makes you feel good.

  • Its a cute song , bringing me back to simpler times of the 60 ties

Nice harmonies , Cool little guitar vocal song

@RainyDayMan Thanks as always RDM. I agree with that, it feels a lot more like an album track, and I kind of like that about it, honestly. Speaking of albums, I’m currently in the process of one, and this one would fit right in the middle somewhere, I reckon.

    Glad you liked the harmonies!

One thing I did find interesting is that despite the actual lyrics being pretty sad, the song still seemed to give off a feel good vibe to you guys. I’ve also noticed this about some of my other songs in the past. Maybe it’s the nostalgic vibe? Either way, I appreciate the compliments 🙂
  • Very 60's in a positive way. There's some nice chord work here and the vocals are great. The Beatles influence is here of course, but why not? A bit of the Everlys too. A great track.😀

  • Definitely a 60s folk feel to this, which I like. The 6/8 time somehow adds to the gentle nostalgic feel. Nice harmonies. I like this a lot ☺️
