Sell a million songs in a month. Possible?

How realistic is it that you could sell a million songs at $1 in one month? The world has like 8 billion people in it. All you need is 1 out of 8000 people to buy your song. With the internet most people in the world are reachable. How would you do it using no financial investment, just through online postings and such?

Start with the idea that it is in fact possible. My off the cuff answer, create a song that is novel in some way and get it out there in the right places so it goes viral.

  • Viral takes money . your thinking your going to make a million off Bandcamp ? Well that be great and very unrealistic

  • @robwills - armin van buuren, whose been in the EDM industry for decades, says it's virtually impossible to make it because of the sheer number of people now who have dj mixers and DAWS in their homes. Not only that, now with AI being able to product tracks quickly, makes it more challenging. which means you need really strong, clean, well-produced music that stands out.

  • man If could make 50k a year on amateur Band Camp , You can bet I'd sign up

  • Not very many people buy songs these days. Some do, but mostly folks listen through streaming services.

Nope , Then add AI . They're paying $9.99 a month on Spotify for a billion downloads

  • Not only him, but deadmou5, also came out against bandcamp, saying the only one that makes money is bandcamp

  • I'm not saying is very difficult to do. I'm saying it's very possible. It's like someone that works at low pay jobs for years but then discovers that all they needed to do was create a simple online automated matching service that matches advertisers with content providers and now they make a million per month. Very difficult to do but very possible.

Maybe target songs to very particular markets, like schools, gyms, or groups of some kind? In fact one of my songs it appears was used by a school in Singapore to teach students how to be nice to others. The title of my song is "Be nice to everyone" and you can hear it here (the first song):

  • Did you make 7 bucks on the album ?

  • @robwills - do you make any money off Bandcamp? The article that elvis posted and from what deadmau5 said, the only one that makes money is bandcamp.. be curious to know if you make anything.

  • Yes. I made about $5.00 net profit in the last year and a half. But it was a friend who bought it all.🙂

That's not the point though. At least I have a mechanism where people can actually pay me. That's very important, obviously. The point is that if you can find a way to get people to really like your song(s) then 1 million sales is in fact possible. like I said, there are 8 billion people in the world. You only need a small fraction of that to pay you $1.

All I'm saying is open your mind and maybe there is a solution. Maybe even a formula that will work every time.

Well there ya go , yes the formula is set , almost impossible to ROI , been doing this for years , Your going to pay to be heard. only the lucky majors are making money , lot scams out there

  • Well, if you find the answer, please let us know!

  • I was going to say, if you find the formula you probably should keep it to yourself!

  • if someone is selling a formula , it probably don't work in the first place

  • No one will sell a successful formula but they may tell someone. That's a bad idea. For example, if you said "There is a network of "sewing clubs" all over the US. They listen to music while the sew and they like songs with sewing lyrics in the songs. I sell 5 songs a week to 2000 clubs and they each pay me a $1 a song. I have been making $10K total profit a week!"

In the above case you may then find the person you told about this is now selling their sewing songs to the same network! Heaven forbid if you posted that formula online! You would need to find another formula!

  • You need to go in a studio and a get a great recording , than you can apply your ideas on how to sell downloads

You want a young producer , Or they're stuck in the 70ties . listen to 2025 metal bands and not Led Zeppelin

  • I think Rob has a point. If you can find a niche and write for it, you might sell a few. It might be writing about a town and people from that town enjoy listening to it. I wrote one about a football club in Scotland. It's not a great song, but it gets more listens than most of my stuff.

Not going to get you to the millions though.

  • I think you have a point people do not buy songs anymore , its a just a calling card to see them in concert
