God Fearing Atheist

There's a doubting Thomas in my head
Did Jesus rise from the dead
Sometimes I believe in Evolution
The Big Bang and nuclear fusion
But when the specter of death gets too close
I cling to the Bible and Holy Ghost
Ch
I'm God-Fearing Atheist
Over my heart I wear a crucifix
Science or faith will set me free
Don't know which one it will be
Devil on the left makes trouble
Angel on the right makes me tremble
Some folks might call me a damn hypocrite
I'm a God Fearing Atheist
V2
Astrology is for gypsies
People with insecurities
I've read the Book of Revelations
Damnation and salvation
At best I’m lukewarm agnostic
Strong and gentle, kind and caustic
Ch
Bridge
Prayers fill up churches and foxholes
Here comes Calvary preacher now
Better try to dig my way out

@ElvisNash while I don't agree with this lyric in its' entirety, pretty cool subject to address. Whoa! Wild Ride!!! And upon listening and not really knowing you, still, I really don't see you as such.

Sincere and very original song. I too have lived the conflict described by the protagonist, then I understood as I grew older that there is no contradiction between faith and science...at least if you consider a faith that is not simplistic and rigid...
Well done!0 -
Like this one Elvis, love the hook, sticks in the mind. Really good rhymes in there to enjoy.
Might need a push in the Bible belt but a very good song nevertheless.

If...an alien space craft arrived on earth tomorrow...took over the planet's communication systems, and explained to the world that they were the ones that implanted the concept of Gods, a long time ago, in an attempt to have the human race stay peaceful...and that Gods don't actually exist...would it be difficult for any of you to be righteous? Let's define righteous by the golden rule...do unto others etc...

"God Fearing Atheist" is definitely going to get attention! Good hook.
I like how you rhyme trouble and tremble.
You're capturing the dilemma that all of us have to consider.
Good song.
And thanks to all for the sensible and relevant replies.

@StoneFlowers anyway, even in your scenario, you have to choose a God for living : your god can be money, women, success, your body… I think the best god to choose is love for others, the only god that does miracles…but it’s an illusion to think that you can live without a god…god is your deepest motivation0

Ya buddy...there are no atheists in a fox hole!
Good one!

@bhengen maybe we should discuss in another topic because we risk to loose focus on Elvis’ song. Anyway my first approach to faith was using a psychological definition (also Jung said something similar). God=the center of your deepest desires. (For us buddhists you don’t speak of a creator god but of deities, but the reasoning could be the same). If your god is Immeasurable Love, that’ a wisdom god, otherwise he’s a mondane god.0
-
You’re welcome! Ps. It’s my personal reasoning, not the official buddhist way of thinking0

Naw you guys can chat on this song , It's odd one for sure
We sure get caught up on all that , Relgion and all that

OP say's it's OK to ramble so...Like the old Lennon song, Imagine, no religion no heaven. My church is the great out doors. No Gods there per se. Some people call it Paganism. In any event I don't need a God in my life to be "righteous", but I'm probably a rare bird.

@StoneFlowers - you're thinking of atheism, not paganism. paganism is polytheistic, having many deities. There's a big misconception that they don't believe, that and they are devil worshipers.

It's the discussions, which spring up, that make the song more real. The discussion very often brings about understandings that bring about some good re-writes, as well. Cut out the discussions and you just might miss out on some very good insights.

@IronKnee - yes, because in this instance the OP has said that it was ok. The issue came about when the OP requested to comment only on the lyrics, and members ignored that and took over the post. Not all posts warrant a discussion. we need to be respectful of the OP and their request.

I didn't request any thing Bill , it just a crazy idea song I had a few years ago

It was a blanket statement, bhengen. Those who write "sensitive" lyrics and don't want feedback on the poignancy of those lyrics, suits me just fine. Although, I have to ask... why on earth write about sensitive issues if you don't want to hear the crtits?
I know. Discussion are a valuable tool. A good provocative discussion tells me much more than a crit of any rhyming scheme I may have...although that is OK, too.

I'm not sensitive , say what you want , its just discussions , if you pitch songs to publishers as much as me , you get tuffed skinned

I'm not sure what comment Iron made as I have him blocked, based on your comment, I most likely not have enjoyed it much :)

Talk about sensitive. What on Earth did I say......Anyone?

No idea , I requested nothing on this song , anyone can say anything they want , I'm not sensitive
