All he had

She was all he had
Verse
There’s a rusted roof on the old tin shed
where I’d to sip on Grandpa’s shine.
The house burned down three years ago
So there ain’t much left behind.
When grandma died he hit the bottle hard
stayed drunk for days at a time.
Her death pretty much did him in.
It pretty much wrecked his life.
Chorus
She was all he had and it broke him
He was never the same.
Verse
He’d disappear in the old tin shed
And drink till the sunlight dimmed.
The day that grandma died
It pretty much did him in.
She was all he had and it broke him
He was never the same again.
I remember him telling us stories
my younger brother and me.
verse
Each tale had a lesson to teach
Things he wanted us to see.
He was a friend as much as a teacher
kept me from losing my way.
I remember feeling alone
the day that he went to his grave.
Chorus
She was all he had and it broke him
He was never the same again.
Verse
In the corner there’s an old coffee can
with a pocket watch inside.
Its hands frozen at ten O’clock
the exact time that he died.
It was there with the pistol beside him
on the floor of this old shed;
where I found him after the bang
the blood running from his head.
Bridge
It taught me what it meant to love someone
and I wanted you to understand
that loving a woman with all of your heart
can be the death a man.
Chorus
She was all he had and it broke him
He was never the same again.
He’d disappear in the old tin shed
And drink till the sunlight dimmed.
The day that grandma died
It pretty much did him in.
She was all he had and it broke him
He was never the same again.

That's a good one Carroll. Hits hard. Really pulls on the emotions.
I like the nostalgic opening, The love of the young man for his grandpa as a mirror for what the grandfather felt for his wife.
Structurally the recorded song has evolved compared to what you've posted, and in my mind for the better. The longer chorus works very well.
The suicide is jarring, and I'm sure it's meant to be - make it hit harder
Music is a great fit for the lyric. Has a real sing a long factor, which is kind of odd considering the context!
Very well done indeed.
